Cold/Flu Routine from an RN

Here’s a brief rundown on how I help my baby/toddler get comfortable when they have cold symptoms (cough, runny nose, congestion, stuffiness, etc). It’s very similar to what I do for myself.

If you want a greater breakdown of must have items, I’ve created an additional post here.

Morning:

The goal is to clear out the nasty mucus that has built up overnight. I try to create an environment of humidified air. You can accomplish this by letting a hot shower run for a few minutes with the door shut to the bathroom, then bring your child in with you and they can sit on your lap to breath in the humidified air and loosen up mucus. I try to do this for 10-15 minutes.

Next, use sterile nasal spray and nasal aspirator to help clear out what was loosened up. You’ll often notice more coughing as the mucus loosens which may tickle their throat. They might also be coughing up mucus that was swallowed in the night.

Apply child friendly chest rub.

Fluids– if you’re able to give them some warm water with a little lemon or a fruit flavor they might enjoy, it can also help clear out what was draining overnight. Hydration is important. If warm liquid isn’t an option then just do fluid that they will tolerate.

Continue to try and keep your child hydrated throughout the day. Utilize boogie wipes or soft tissues to help decrease chance of skin breakdown near your child’s nose.

Comfort, Rest, Fluids.

Bedtime:

Similar to the morning, except you’re preparing your body for sleep. Carry out the same routine, except make sure to utilize a humidifier during the night and don’t drink an overload of fluids before bed.

If mucus is draining causing your child to cough a lot, try to find a way to elevate them safely.
